Job Description for Underwater Inspection Technical Support Assistant:

National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) conducts a major programme of work for one of our important customers at their sites. Our expert team offers a unique capability in the field of Post Irradiation Evaluation.  We develop, deploy and maintain spent fuel underwater examination equipment, within a controlled active environment, using specialist designed equipment. The team is based out of Workington Laboratory but undertakes underwater spent fuel examinations on site at EDF-Energy Nuclear Power Stations to high quality and safety requirements.

The successful candidate will join a small team, who have unique expertise, and will be required to attend underwater surveys (6-8 surveys per year, working away for up to 12 days at a time), assist in the servicing and maintenance of equipment and produce data packages for delivery to EDF.

The position requires the maintenance of strong working relationships with the immediate team, projects and facility teams. The programme requires team members to work to high quality standards and demonstrate an enabling, pro-active attitude to resolving issues.  In accordance with any nuclear industry positions, individuals will need to demonstrate a high degree of nuclear professionalism, adhering and contributing to a positive health and safety culture.

When not carrying out underwater surveys at EDF sites, the role holder will be able to work flexibly under hybrid arrangements, with some time required at Workington and Sellafield sites.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Underwater Inspection Technical Support Assistant:

  • To work as part of the endoscope team carrying out underwater surveys at EDF sites.
  • Maintain / service endoscopy equipment.
  • Assist in the reporting and checking of data packages to EDF.
  • Assist in the technical characterization of spent fuel via underwater inspection.
  • Develop technical understanding of spent fuel via working closely with / in AHF Fuels team.
  • Comply with legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the role. 
  • Where appropriate, develop their skills and abilities for the benefit of themselves and the company.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Underwater Inspection Technical Support Assistant:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to deliver within a multi-team environment.
  • Classified Worker (or ability to become so).
  • Proven ability to conform to appropriate safe systems of work.
  • Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Underwater Inspection Technical Support Assistant:

  • Prior experience of working in radiation-controlled areas.
  • Mechanical or electrical background.
  • Experience of data handling, verification, and manipulation.
