Technology Manager/Senior Technical Lead

Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Instrumentation Technologist in NNL Measurement and Analysis (NNL M&A). This senior technical role will be responsible for technical delivery of project work as well as leading NNL M&A university interactions and innovation at a time when the business has the potential to transform into the leading Analytical & Characterisation Laboratory in the UK.


The role will provide the opportunity to contribute and develop within the role, working on several aspects of instrumentation and in-situ analysis development for the nuclear environment. This is an important role working closely with NNL Technical Leads and will require interaction with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Opportunity to work on software programmes which will require experience in the C# programming language.


This senior technical role will support the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) university interactions programme for the next four years as well as supporting other customer projects and plant operations. Work will include identification of requirements, preparing proposals for research, development and innovation, executing both desk-based and practical work programmes and significant stakeholder engagement. The NDA university interactions programme provides an opportunity to mentor PhD students and steer their research towards the requirements of the sector. The role will also support NNL’s membership, on behalf of NDA, of the Research Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation subject to continued NDA funding. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for acting on behalf of NDA to ensure maximum value and impact is achieved for the NDA estate from the Research Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE) research programme. 


The candidate will also have the opportunity to work on internally funded research projects. The position will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to author high impact publications and to be actively involved in knowledge exchange with the nuclear industry

 

Role Responsibility

Responsibilities include: 

• Preparation of proposals for research, development and innovation M&A projects

• Development of experimental work programmes 

• Experimental write-up and data reporting. 

• The candidate must be able to work in a small team or on their own on projects. 

• Industrial supervision of M&A relevant PhD students

• Interfacing with customers and attending technical conferences. 

• Interface with in-house multi-disciplinary teams.

• Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements. 

• Provide support to develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company. 

• Ensures all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied.

• Support on software programmes which will require experience in the C# programming language.

• Support NDA’s Membership of the Research Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications 

• A qualification in relevant field e.g. Non-Destructive Testing/Evaluation, Instrumentation, software or suitable experience applicable to nuclear operations

• An experienced practitioner with significant industrial experience with regards to the development of in-situ analysis techniques and software solutions.

• Provide evidence of self-motivation with demonstrable levels of drive, energy and resilience.

• Must have exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of personnel.

• A proven track record form producing high quality technical reports.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications 

• Experience in the management of research programmes. 

• Will be familiar with the NNL’s ISO9001 accredited “Development of Special Instruments” procedure and control and instrumentation systems.

• Membership of a professional Institute.
