Technical Graduate – Physics

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

At NNL, our vision is to provide world-leading nuclear expertise and innovation. Do you have the drive and technical talent to help us get there?

Our Technical Leadership Graduate Scheme will develop the next generation of technical experts. Not only will you receive the opportunity to work on challenging and exciting projects, but you’ll continually learn from skilled and knowledgeable industry experts who are leaders in their field.

Our research and development work supports the entire nuclear fuel cycle, so you could be working on advanced fuel manufacture, supporting operational plants and reactors, or planning for post operational clean out and decommissioning.

We will help you become everything you can be, by challenging, stretching and pushing you to your limits while supporting you every step of the way.

Our dedicated Graduate programme supports all of our graduates in their personal development whilst working in our technical teams, and we’ll expect you to work towards achieving chartership of your chosen professional institute. As part of the programme you will even gain a qualification in Leadership and Management.

The two-year programme starts with a tailored, week-long induction programme to welcome you into the business, help you understand the breadth of what NNL does and describe the programme and what’s expected of you.

Working alongside fellow graduates, you will then embark on the training programme, with sessions every three months. You’ll learn project management, communication skills and nuclear insight while we help you develop your confidence in team working and public speaking. You’ll learn everything there is to know about the UK and global nuclear industry as well as internal research and development.

Role Responsibility

As a Technical Leadership Graduate, we will help you develop towards taking a lead role in our research and development projects. You will acquire a depth of knowledge and specific technical skills in a particular area of our business. You will experience the full life cycle of our projects; from liaising with customers to understand their needs, planning work and developing new methods and processes, to documenting your work effectively in technical reports.  Our graduates support us in many areas of the business; business development, product innovation, project delivery and environment, health, safety, security and quality.

Physics graduates may be involved in high profile, customer facing projects such as modelling current as well as future nuclear reactors, modelling the behaviour and predicting the performance of fuel in a reactor or modelling future fuel cycle scenarios using strategic assessment software. You could study and gain an in-depth understanding of fundamental nuclear data and its impact on the operation of nuclear reactors or the prediction of future behaviour of nuclear waste stored long term in a repository.

As a graduate physicist, you could be involved in providing criticality safety support to facilities covering most of the nuclear fuel cycle. They may help to write the safety cases these facilities operate to; run the computational models necessary to determine whether proposed changes to operations will be safe; train operators and plant managers on criticality safety and provide remedial support if issues are found with operations.

The Ideal Candidate

Naturally curious, you’ll have the drive and determination to discover more – about yourself and our business. Forward-thinking, proactive and positive, you’ll bring your own energy to the team and you’ll have an enquiring mind that helps us to discover solutions to the world’s biggest energy issues.

We’ll also expect you to have graduated, or be on course to graduate with a 2:1 or higher in Physics.
