Job Description for Technical Delivery Manager:

As old reactors reach the end of their lifespan, we need experts like you, with the technical skills to virtually model scenarios that not only enable us to explore new ways of managing the inputs and outputs of reactors, but also pave the way for the implementation of smaller, cleaner revolutionary new reactors. NNL is looking for a high calibre, motivated and experienced individual to be part of the Radiochemistry  management team which has team members based at NNL’s Central Laboratory. The team is part of the Fuels, Reactors and Recycling (FR&R) capability within NNL, which delivers commercial R&D to help solve a wide range of challenges in the nuclear industry.

The Radiochemistry  team have a unique expertise and provide the key skills required to support the UK’s future nuclear programmes as well as playing an important role in several European collaborations. The team specialise in laboratory-scale, medium inventory experiments in reprocessing, isotopic separation, and Pu Science.

The overall size of the Radiochemistry team is expected to grow in the coming years and this will increase the numbers of technical and operational staff. There is therefore a need to increase the number of personnel with the authority and accountability for management of experimental laboratory operations in this area.

NNL is looking for an experienced scientist with an aptitude and enthusiasm for management and a willingness to learn a new skill-set to join a growing team and deliver an exciting programme of work for our customers. The successful candidate will support the Radiochemistry capability manager with line management activities including managing performance and development and supporting delivery of technical work in NNL’s Central Laboratory.

The successful candidate will also supervise Operations in Active laboratories and produce the required safety and compliance documentation to support those activities, undertaking the required training to be able to work safely and effectively in our unique laboratories at the NNL Central Laboratory, which is located on the Sellafield site, Cumbria, applying their knowledge to some key projects and programmes.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Technical Delivery Manager:

  • Carry out the day-to-day line management activities for a small number of the Technical Team (principally Performance Management and Development Reviews and training, etc.).
  • Support the Capability Manager in the delivery of the FR&R EHSS&Q Improvement and Assurance Plans and local Capability Strategy.
  • Provision of specified specialist services and technical support to agreed standards. 
  • To carry out designated work packages to standards of safety, cost, quality and time. 
  • Provision of technical advice and guidance issues appropriate to their working area.  
  • Oversees the work of others and provides coaching to develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company. 
  • Lead the development and application of appropriate technical and managerial processes and systems in their working area. 
  • Complies with all legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the role.
  • Take responsibility and act as Task Supervisor for technical work in the Alpha active laboratories.
  • Act as Area Owner for specific areas of the facility, taking “ownership” of those designated areas, ensuring that the “look and feel” lives up to NNL’s values and expectations and be the single point of contact for stewardship of that area

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Technical Delivery Manager:

  • A directly relevant science degree (e.g. chemistry, materials, or physics).
  • Experience of working to high safety and quality standards in a highly regulated environment.
  • Experience of delivering technical projects to customer requirements.
  • Ability to obtain DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Technical Delivery Manager:

  • Line management or supervisory experience.
  • Experience of nuclear operations (particularly working in a medium active alpha environment) and an understanding of nuclear safety and nuclear security culture.
  • Knowledge of the nuclear industry.
