Senior Technologist

Job Introduction

This role is in the NNL Measurement and Analysis (NNL M&A). This technical role will be responsible for development within the team which will develop technical lead within the team.

The role will provide the opportunity to contribute working on several aspects to instrumentation development for the nuclear environment. This is an important role working closely with NNL Technical Leads and will require interaction with a range of internal and external customers. The successful candidate should have a Master’s in Physics and have experience in prescribing suitable technologies for the Condition Monitoring & Inspection and laboratory-based environment.

The position will primarily support the RAP project and include identification of requirements, writing proposals for research and other customer work, experimental design, providing experimental data, data analysis, testing and underpinning evidence for instrumentation and processes, technical report writing, cross team communication, troubleshooting of instrumentation, writing C# .Net code on the windows and other platforms and image processing. Experience of Technical Working Groups, attending workshops, writing/presenting technical papers and presenting at both local and international conferences.

Role Responsibility

•          Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.

•          Development of experimental work programmes and design of experimental rigs.

•          Collect, analyse, interpret experimental data, experimental write-up and data reporting.

•          The candidate must develop relationships through technical interactions with M&A customers to develop and grow the capability.

•          Interfacing with customers and troubleshooting problems for on-plant systems.

•          Technically mentoring experienced staff, graduates and apprentices to support their technical career development under the guidance of the Team Manger.

•          NNL instrument lead on RAP and development to Technical lead.

•          Work alongside RAP project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.

•          Development of a number of complex instruments, focusing mainly on the area of the RAP techniques incorporating adaptation for use within the nuclear environment.

•          Deputising for the RAP technical manager ensuring that deadlines are delivered, and technical knowledge is available in their absence.

•          Ensures all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications

• Post-graduate qualification (Masters) in relevant field i.e. Physics

• Highly experienced and Knowledge applicable to Instrumentation and software engineering.

• Good understanding of the RAP project outside of immediate responsibility. 

• Good communication skills (written and oral) in order to communicate with the wider technical team, Sellafield Limited equivalents, the multidisciplinary Analytical Equipment Development Team (AEDT) and instrument suppliers and experts from other companies.

• Experience of Technical Working Groups, attending workshops, writing/presenting technical papers and presenting at both local and international conferences.

• Good troubleshooting skills 

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

• Experience in the management of research and innovation programmes. 

• Familiarity with techniques for software development. 

• Familiarity with control and instrumentation systems. 

• Membership of a professional Institute 

• RAP Project experience where responsible for the development of several instruments which are to be installed throughout the new facility.
