The Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment) is responsible for the management and operation of waste and environmental arrangements for NNL’s Sellafield Operations (Windscale and Central Laboratory) to allow the smooth and continued operation of these facilities. They will be responsible for ensuring NNL’s compliance with a number of requirements and regulations governing the nuclear industry and its relevant Site Licence Conditions, principally in relation to waste management (solid, aerial and liquid). They will act as the primary appointee for a number of major and minor key roles. Though based at the Central Laboratory they will be expected to manage operations at the Windscale Laboratory, as required.
Main Responsibilities for Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment):
- Responsible for the operations of the liquid effluent facilities at Central and Windscale Laboratory.
- Deputise for the Technical Support Manager (Waste & Environment).
- Management of solid waste consignments to Sellafield / NWS / Mitie.
- Management of Waste Liabilities costings of the laboratories.
- Appointed in compliance roles including, but not exclusively: Radiation Protection Supervisor (Sources), CoSHH Coordinator, Environmental Coordinator, ILW Coordinator, Plant Solid Waste Coordinator, PCM Coordinator, Liquid Effluent Coordinator.
- Ensure compliance of Safe Systems of Work procedures and report/initiate any necessary remedial action for their areas of responsibility.
- Provide advice and guidance on issues appropriate to operational documentation and associated Safe Systems of Work.
- Ensure resources and equipment are available to support waste operations.
- Appointed an Originator and Task supervision of waste operations, as required.
- Manage the laboratory’s chemical and waste inventory, database and associated procedures.
- Carry out audits, observations and inspections to monitor and effect remedial action where necessary.
- Lead regulator interventions e.g. ONR, Environment Agency.
Essential Criteria for Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment):
- Experience of working in an industrial environment.
- Experience of safe systems of work and associated documentation.
- IOSH Working Safely or higher.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of the requirements for liquid effluent and waste management and disposal.
- Excellent organisational and coordination skills.
- GCSE’s grade C or equivalent in Science, English and Maths (STEM) subject).
- Ability to achieve DV Clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial an criminal records checks plus 10 years’ worth of UK residency).
Desirable Criteria for Senior Technical Support Officer (Waste and Environment):
- Experience of the nuclear industry.
- Knowledge of industrial waste issues and solutions.
- A good understanding of NNL operations on the Sellafield Site.
- IOSH Managing Safely.
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Environmental Management or Health and Safety.
- NVQ Level 3/ 4 / HNC / HND /A Levels / Graduate in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) subject.
