The Senior Radiological Protection Advisor (RPA) shall provide competent advice on radiological and conventional safety related matters within their area of responsibility.

They shall provide assurance that activities are being undertaken in a safe and compliant manner, so as to meet all requirements of the Nuclear Site Licence and all Regulatory and Legislative purposes.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Senior Radiological Protection Advisor: 

  • The Senior Radiological Protection Advisor shall be responsible for the provision of competent advice with regards radiological safety in order to comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 in their area(s) of responsibility.
  • Shall be responsible for the provision of competent advice with regards conventional safety in order to comply with all Sellafield site and UK regulatory and legislative requirements within their area(s) of responsibility
    • Oversees radiological protection compliance at all NNL facilities  conducting regular compliance audits
    • Create and deliver training packages for radiological protection
    • Coach and mentor to trainee RPAs 
  • Responsible for providing up front support and peer review of work packages (routine or non-routine) including review of Risk Assessments and Dose Estimates/Assessments
  • Provides advice for conformity to SLP arrangements within their area of responsibility (eg the use of Radioactive Sealed Sources, Radiation Generators, Dosimetry (assessment/recording), suitability of Radiological Protection Instrumentation and Personal Protective Equipment, arrangements for outside workers etc) and provides annual reviews to demonstrate compliance
  • Responsible for the review of radiological classification of areas, HP&S radiological survey schedule, monitored/classified worker status and dose management strategy within their area(s) of responsibility
  • Ability to apply Conservative or Operational Decision Making (CDM/ODM) when fault conditions dictate the need
  • As the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for their area(s) of responsibility they shall keep abreast of all applicable Rules and Regulations and provide advice regarding the management of their application.
  • Required to attend various safety committees e.g. MSC, PMP Committee to provide expert knowledge of their area(s) of responsibility
  • Required to attend HAZOPs to provide expert knowledge of their area(s) of responsibility
  • Required to attend various forums (internal and external) to keep abreast of best practice and advice for the implementation of this back into the workplace
  • Undertake regular self-audits, work place inspections and task observations within their area(s) of responsibility to ensure that standards and expectations for EHSS&Q are being maintained
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of radiological / conventional safety improvements
  • Provide assurance that all compliance records are being recorded and managed correctly within their areas(s) of responsibility
  • Closely liaise with B170 Health Physics service and Sellafield Approved Dosimetry Service
  • Undertake investigations in relation to the requirements of IRR99 upon request by NNL

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Senior Radiological Protection Advisor: 

  • Requirement to hold the RPA 2000 Certificate of Competence
  • Requirement to be a Chartered Radiation Professional (CRadP) with the Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) 
  • Requirement to be appointed as a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) 
  • Ability to demonstrate supervisory experience for operations undertaken within a nuclear plant as applicable
  • Degree qualified in a Scientific or equivalent discipline. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of stated qualifications
  • Holds IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent as a minimum qualification. NEBOSH General Certificate/Diploma would be desirable
  • Evidence of self-motivation with demonstrable levels of drive, energy and resilience
  • Ability to demonstrate conservative decision making, even in pressure situations 
  • Experience in incident and emergency response
  • Ability to communicate key information both verbal and written with operators, customers and stakeholders
  • A thorough awareness of nuclear, conventional safety and security requirements applicable to their area(s) of responsibility
  • Ability to obtain DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency)

Desirable Criteria for Senior Radiological Protection Advisor: 

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Environmental Permitting Regulations 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Clearance and Exemption Process
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Radiation Emergency Preparedness and Public Information Regulations
  • General awareness of Safety Case implementation methodology is desirable
  • Requirement to be appointed as a Person Organising Work (POW) as applicable
  • Requirement to be appointed as a Safety Supervisor as applicable
  • Requirement to be appointed as a CoSHH Risk Assessor as applicable
  • Requirement to become appointed to emergency response roles e.g. EH&S advisor
  • Requirement to become appointed as a Sub Contractor Supervisor as applicable
