The Remote Engineering Design & Robotics Team supplies bespoke remote handling equipment, tooling, inspection systems and robotic systems and tooling for all aspects of remote operations plant intervention work in the nuclear industry. We cover all aspects of projects including consultancy, optioneering studies, concept design, detail design, manufacture, test, commissioning, and on-site operations. 

Senior Mechanical Engineers will work in the supply of remotely deployed equipment for use in active plant, underwater operations, radioactive waste size reduction and processing and decommissioning. In addition, Senor Mechanical Engineers will also lead the design, build and operation of inactive test rigs to prove new technology, equipment and processes prior to deployment in active nuclear plant.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Lead the production of 3D models and 2D detailed design drawings to the appropriate drawing standards using state of the art 3D CAD workstations. Approve detailed designs, calculations and technical documentation.
  • Lead the build, installation, commissioning and operational support of plant based equipment. Lead operation and trial of test rig equipment and processes to client specifications, collating trials results, analysing data and the generation of technical reports. Lead on the development of prototype equipment and processes through to supply of end products.
  • Approve product safety related documentation, e.g. risk assessments, method statements, operation & maintenance manuals. Ensure compliance with all legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the role, including those required for UKCA marking.
  • Provide mechanical engineering consultancy and support for remotely operable systems and equipment for the nuclear industry. Provide technical advice and guidance on issues appropriate to their working area.
  • Liaison with suppliers and manufacturers, initiation and progression of the procurement process including production of procurement specifications through to delivery and inspection.
  • Keep abreast of developments in their own field and applying them to designated work packages.
  • Provision of technical supervision for technician and craft personnel.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Chartered Engineer.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related subject and a relevant level of experience.
  • Experience with 3D CAD design packages, preferable SolidWorks.
  • Knowledge and experience of applying the legislative and regulatory requirements relating to engineering product development projects and UKCA marking.
  • Ability to Lead in a multi-disciplined team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated, high energy contributor. Ability to work and research independently. Good organisational and planning skills.
  • Problem solving, questioning attitude and solution seeking skills. Proactive approach to maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Capable of attaining Laboratory Task Supervisor role.
  • Capable of attaining Lead Engineer Role.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Knowledge of nuclear industry and plant operations. 
  • Experience in the development and operation of remote operations equipment. 
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
