Senior Human Factors Consultant

Job Introduction

Provide technical leadership and delivery of technical projects in the Human Factors area of the Safety, Security and Safeguards team to time, cost and quality. 

Enhance own technical skills within the Human Factors area, support development of team members skills and capabilities and lead activities in support of the development of NNL's national reputation in the Human Factors area.

Job Context & Challenges:

The role requires the application of Human Factors knowledge and expertise to advise and support the design and safety assessment process as well as substantiate the claims made on the person within the safety assessment.  However, uniquely, the role requires building excellent relationships with mutual trust to demonstrate a collaborative approach with the customer/facility to ensuring nuclear safety, whilst maintaining a high level of integrity. 
 

Role Responsibility

Principal Accountabilities:

•    Provide expert knowledge of Human Factors including being up to date with developments in methodology and approach.  National level subject matter expert.
•    Leading technical delivery of projects in the Human Factors area to time, cost, quality, value and service requirements, including:
o    supervision of other staff and consultants
o    management of relationships with Laboratory Manager, Projects/PMA, Compliance, other safety and security disciplines, Operations Control Manager and other designated safety roles
o    advice, training and independent inspection
•    Leading Human Factors support to multi-disciplinary teams addressing safety challenges.
•    Managing the relationships with internal and external stakeholders, e.g., Laboratory Manager, Compliance, PMA, site license company, regulator (ONR), INSA and customers.
•    Leading the identification and development of new opportunities for the team, including technical support to bids.
•    Use initiative to develop new capabilities through innovative approaches and providing insight.  Technical lead on complex IR&D projects and submissions.
•    Maintain technical awareness of both NNL and external competitors’ capabilities within the broader Human Factors safety area.  Identify best practice to improve the team.
•    Developing team SQEP skills for Human Factors, e.g., mentoring and supervision.  Design and deliver specialist Human Factors training.
•    Membership of relevant national industry groups to represent NNL.  

Dimensions:

This role has no line management responsibilities.  However, the role will involve mentoring and supervision, and the leadership of the technical delivery of projects.

The Ideal Candidate

•    Degree qualified or equivalent level of demonstrable technical capability.
•    SQEP 3 with demonstrable experience in Human Factors. 
•    Preferably Chartered Membership of a professional institution.
•    Excellent level of knowledge in the specialised field of Human Factors.  Detailed knowledge of advanced techniques
•    Proven ability to act independently, under own initiative, while supervising other members of the team
•    Strong communication skills, including multi-site working.
•    Excellent team working skills, with ability to inspire the work of a team
•    Experienced in mentoring and developing technical skills.
•    Excellent networking skills, maintaining network across the Human Factors field nationally.
