Job Description for Secure IT Systems Engineer: 

NNL is where your understanding of reactors fuels the nation. As part of our Fuel Reactor & Reprocessing capability, you’ll play a vital role in developing the UK fuel cycle in line with advances in new technology and new processes. As old reactors reach the end of their lifespan, we need experts like you, with the technical skills to virtually model scenarios that not only enable us to explore new ways of managing the inputs and outputs of reactors, but also pave the way for the implementation of smaller, cleaner revolutionary new reactors. This is a place where you can use your knowledge and expertise to do long term meaningful work for years to come. 

NNL operate a number of secure facilities and IT networks across several sites in support of its defence customers. This vacancy is to support the Senior Defence Security and Secure IT Manager in the day to day operation of these facilities and associated Secure IT Infrastructures. The role will be based on the Sellafield site but will involve occasional travel to other NNL and customer sites to maintain these network spurs.

Training will be given where required to ensure the cryptographic custodianship and secure infrastructure aspects of the role can be executed. However the applicant must be able to demonstrate a solid background in IT network management, maintenance and user support, ideally within a UK governmental arena.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Secure IT Systems Engineer: 

  • Day to day management, support & maintenance of the NNL Secure Defence Network and associated classified terminals/machines for their users
  • Day to day management & maintenance of NNL’s MOD owned Nuclear Submarine Enterprise (NSE) network terminals
  • Management of monthly maintenance visits with IT Support Contactors
  • Arranging the purchase, issue and management of MOD connecting Secure Connect Industry (SCI) machines
  • Provide support to the Accreditation Process of Defence IT Equipment
  • Management of access to and maintenance of the NNL Accountancy and Tracking of Materials (ATOM) system
  • Support to Business Continuity Activities for the Secure Defence Network Backup solution
  • Management of Import and Export ((IMPEX) activities across the Secure Networks in the Defence Portfolio
  • Cryptographic Accountant for Cryptographic items used in the Defence Portfolio

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Secure IT Systems Engineer: 

  • Degree qualified in an applicable IT subject area or degree qualified with appropriate experience in the subject area
  • Experience working on Microsoft Windows IT networks
  • Experience of administrative user roles on networked systems
  • Ability to view UK eyes only information – this involves being a British citizen as defined in the British Nationality Act 1981 (British Nationality Act 1981 (legislation.gov.uk)).  Please note if you hold a dual nationality of which one nationality is British you may still be able to view UK eyes only information it does however depend on what your other nationality is.  
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency)
  • Full Driving license

Desirable Criteria for Secure IT Systems Engineer: 

  • Experience of working with MOD or MOD supply chain
  • Experience of Cryptography or Cryptographic Systems
  • Experience of working with Classified Data
