Safe System of Work Controller

Job Introduction

The Safe Systems Controller is a highly visible position of authority within NNL supporting the Engineering Manager to ensure the company's continued compliance to all regulations governing the nuclear industry and Site Licence Conditions. The role is responsible for monitoring change, leading on incident and event management, and assessing the impact and coordination of the activities required to achieve compliance in the most effective way for the business. 
The ideal candidate will be experienced in working in a regulatory capacity; detail orientated and is able to work to stringent deadlines.

Role Responsibility

  • Responsible for Command and Control, the Safe Systems Controller must not be involved in production activities whilst on duty to maintain independence and prevent any potential conflict between safety and production.
  • Responsible for overall control and supervision of people and plant in their designated area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving all safety documentation (Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments etc) supporting any SSOW submission are suitable and sufficient.
  • Authority to cease work at any point they deem challenges safety or security standards.
  • Knowledge at all times of all persons (resident or visitors) attending their areas, ensuring the routes have been thoroughly risk assessed and deemed safe.
  • Responsible for undertaken plant walkdowns at the start and end of the day to ensure when setting people to work the area is safe to do so. 
  • Responsible for controlling access to all work areas within their remit through enforcing application of defined access control procedures.
  • Accountable where any problems are identified and responsible for taking corrective actions and managing recovery in liaison with the DAP’s  
  • Attendance as quorate member of the daily Operations Focus Meeting.
  • Attend any forums (internal or external) as requested to keep abreast of best practices around other NNL Laboratories, responsible for sharing and implementing any learning.
  • Accountable for ensuring that SSOW office log book is compiled as per defined log keeping standards and presents a true account of plant status. 

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Safe Systems of Work Controller

  • Compliance professional, with extensive practical and relevant experience in a compliance role 
  • Hold IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent as a minimum qualification, NEBOSH General Certificate would be desirable
  • Safety Case awareness, demonstrable knowledge of nuclear Safety Mechanisms (SM), Safety Related (SR) and Safety Features (SF)
  • Must demonstrate an ability to analyse and interpret complex information from several, sometimes conflicting sources, with proven problem-solving ability to make decisions based upon this information.
  • Ability to demonstrate conservative decision making, even in pressure situations Requirement to become appointed to the role of Safe System Of Work Controller
  • Required to attend and pass the PP&E Isolations blue book course
  • Required to attend and pass the Electrical Isolations red book course
  • Ability to achieve DV clearance 

Desirable Criteria for Safe Systems of Work Controller

  • Demonstrable knowledge of operational & maintenance requirements
  • Experience in working in a Construction and Commissioning environment
