The Remote Engineering Design & Robotics Team supplies bespoke remote handling equipment, tooling, inspection systems and robotic systems and tooling for all aspects of remote operations plant intervention work in the nuclear industry. We cover all aspects of projects including consultancy, optioneering studies, concept design, detail design, manufacture, test, commissioning, and on-site operations. 

Robotics Systems Technologists will work in the NNL’s growing Robotics capability area to support the delivery of the SL and NDA robotics strategy for accelerated decommissioning for which NNL manage.

This Robotic System Technologist will meet the SQEP requirements of RAI for Harsh Environments to lead work programmes from concept through to customer delivery.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Robotics Systems Technologist:

  • The innovative use of advanced technologies and development of engineered solutions to a range of robotic and tele-operational challenges.
  • The innovative integration of technologies to satisfy end user requirements.
  • Delivery of a program of development trials on a range of tele-operable components and systems, which includes:
    • Preparation of safety paperwork associated with experimental programme.
    • Undertaking small and large-scale trials, involving proprietary and bespoke robotics hardware and test rig equipment.
    • Complete series of experimental trials as outlined by Specialist.
    • Collect, tabulate and interpret experimental data and presentation of results in formal document formats, papers and presentations.
    • Development of prototype equipment and processes through to supply of end products.
    • Preparation of product safety related documentation, e.g. risk assessments, method statements, operation & maintenance manuals.
    • Comply with all legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the role, including those required for UKCA marking.
    • To provide mechanical engineering consultancy and support for remotely operable systems and equipment for the nuclear industry.
    • Liaison with suppliers and manufacturers, initiation and progression of the procurement process including production of procurement specifications through to delivery and inspection.
    • Provide technical advice and guidance on issues appropriate to their working area.
    • Keep abreast of developments in their own field and applying them to designated work packages.
    • Provision of technical supervision for technician and craft personnel.
    • Travel to other sites in order to attend project and customer meetings.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Robotics Systems Technologist:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in robotics and software research and development.
  • A working knowledge of the relevant safety legislation and quality and environmental standards.
  • Hands on experience developing software control for industrial robots, research robots or bespoke manipulator systems within a laboratory or industrial environment.
  • Experience in the use of simulation or software for the verification and validation of robotic control programs.
  • Problem solving, questioning attitude and solution seeking skills.
  • Proactive approach to maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Robotics Systems Technologist:

  • Chartered or working towards Chartership status.
  • Knowledge of nuclear industry and plant operations.
  • Knowledge and experience of applying the legislative and regulatory requirements relating to engineering product development projects and CE marking.
  • IOSH Working Safely and/or demonstration of safety in an industrial setting.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated, high energy contributor.
  • Good organisational and planning skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work and research independently.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplined team.
  • Experience of tele-operation of robotic systems within a nuclear or other hazardous environment is an advantage but not essential.
