Research Technologist (Instrumentation and In-Situ Analysis Team)

Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Technologist in NNL Measurement and Analysis (NNL M&A). This technical role will be responsible for technical delivery of laboratory work as well as development to technical lead in the NNL-M&A at time where the business has the potential transform into a leading Analytical & Characterisation Laboratory in the UK.

The role will provide the opportunity to contribute and developing within the role, working on several aspects to instrumentation development for the nuclear environment. This is an important role working closely with NNL Technical Leads and will require interaction with a range of internal and external customers. The successful candidate should have a background in chemistry (or similar) and have experience of working within a rig hall or laboratory-based environment.

The position will primarily support customer projects and support plants to develop into performing a stack coordinator role. Work will include identification of requirements, writing proposals for research and other customer work, experimental design, providing experimental data, data analysis, testing and underpinning evidence for instrumentation and processes, technical report writing, cross team communication, troubleshooting of instrumentation. Also, on-plant maintenance of instrumentation including NOX detector systems, gas sampling systems and bespoke chemical sensors. Stack coordinator role and environmental management and having the opportunity to become a subject matter expert. Training will be identified and provided where required.

In addition, the researcher will have the opportunity to work on internally funded research projects. The position will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to author high impact publications and to be actively involved in knowledge exchange with the nuclear industry.

Role Responsibility

  • Undertake Stack Coordinator role

          - ensure that statutory stack samples are taken and submitted for                   analysis on a monthly basis,

         - check results,

         - trend discharges and

         - investigate anomalies.

        - Trouble shoot problems with samplers and monitors.

        - Ensure documentation is kept up to date.

  • Development of experimental work programmes and design of experimental rigs
  • Collect, analyse and interpret experimental data an experimental write-up and data reporting.
  • The candidate must be able to work in a small team or on their own on projects.
  • Interfacing with customers and troubleshooting problems for on-plant systems.
  • Interface with in-house multi-disciplinary teams. e.g. NNL Engineering.
  • Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.
  • Provide support to develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company.
  • Ensures all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied
  • Support team to meet objectives

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills / Qualifications

  • A qualification in relevant field e.g. Chemistry, Instrumentation and sensor development or suitable experience applicable to nuclear operations
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  •  Good troubleshooting skills.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications

  • Experience in the management of research programmes.
  • Familiarity with techniques for gas sampling and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with control and instrumentation systems
  • Familiarity with techniques for software development.
  • Membership of a professional Institute.
