Reactor Physicist / Engineer

Job Introduction

A vacancy has arisen in the Nuclear and Reactor Physics team for a high calibre, motivated nuclear engineer or nuclear reactor physicist with a particular interest in undertaking reactor physics modelling, nuclear new build and ANT(Advanced Nuclear Technologies) (Small Modular Reactors (SMR) & Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR)) work as part of a key role within the team. Reactor modelling is one of the key activities in the development of future UK nuclear technologies and therefore feeds into and influences the wider shaping of UK energy policy and the strategy for moving towards a low carbon future.

Role Responsibility

  • Provide specialist technical support to the principal technical lead primarily in the area of UKSMR, as well as in areas of nuclear new build, ANT and other customer projects ensuring the delivery of high-quality outputs.
  • To carry out designated work packages to standards of safety, cost, quality and time. 
  • Provision of specified services to internal/external customers to agreed standards. 
  • Ensures all relevant regulations and procedures are understood and adhered to when delivering projects, working within budgetary limits. 
  • Where appropriate, may contribute to the estimation of project budgetary information and procedures.
  • Where appropriate will maintain good contacts with individuals/organisations at all status levels internal and external to the company.
  • Complies with legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc applicable to the role.
  • To support and collaborate in various meetings as required, under guidance of the technical lead (as required).
  • Take responsibility and be pro-active in the development and application of appropriate technical processes and systems applicable to their work area.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • A relevant Nuclear PhD degree with focus in nuclear engineering or reactor physics.  Alternatively, a relevant Post graduate MSc degree with focus on nuclear engineering or reactor physics with demonstrable work experience
  • Experience of working with ANTs and/or New build projects preferable.
  • Some nuclear related experience of working internationally preferable.
  • Knowledge of programming (C++ and/or Fortran or other relevant codes) with some practical experience.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including MS Office, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint and other relevant tools.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications:

  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Experience in using at least two nuclear codes (One from each listed in (1) and (2)) such as:
    • Thermal-hydraulics code – e.g. COBRA, RELAP and/or TRACE.
    • Nuclear codes e.g. SERPENT, CASMO, WIMS, PANTHER, MCNP and/or SCALE
  • Chartered Physicist, Engineer or Scientist or actively working towards Chartership. 
  • Member of a professional institution.
  • Experience of using UNIX/LINIX operating systems
