Project Manager

Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Project Manager to join the Windscale waste processing team within the National Nuclear Laboratory, based at Sellafield site. The waste processing team are responsible for identifying appropriate wasted processes for existing nuclear materials, developing equipment to aid in the size reduction of these materials and ensuring that the appropriate route for disposal is used.


The Project Manager will preferably have some experience in dealing with the processes and procedures specific to progressing work on Sellafield site, will be capable of providing both planning support and cost data analysis.

In addition to managing today’s projects the Project Manager will also be expected to support the Business Manager in bidding for and winning new business to meet the growth strategy. The ability to write proposals and successfully bid for new work is desired.

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure adequate health and safety arrangements are in place at all times for all team members and for sub-contracted work.
  • Act as direct interface with the Customer for all project issues.
  • Manage project team to ensure that work is delivered to meet time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Support planning resources in the production and maintenance of project plans for existing and future projects.
  • Produce estimates, offer letters and inputs to bids for new business.
  • Supply required information to the NNL finance team to enable invoices to be raised.
  • Control budgets for internal time bookings and external purchases, tracking spends against approved budgets.
  • Maximise NNL’s delivery performance against customer key milestones and targets.
  • Raise purchase requests for external purchases of goods and services.
  • Ensure that project team are suitably qualified, competent and experienced to fulfil their roles.
  • Ensure the quality of project deliverables meet with the customer’s expectations.
  • Ensure adherence to the NNL processes and procedures.
  • Contribute to the company growth strategy and business plan.

Where required, training in the above skills will be made available for a suitable candidate.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • Degree qualified in science / engineering / project management or an equivalent combination of qualification and experience.
  • Ability to operate Agresso and Microsoft Project and proficient in use of spreadsheets.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to deliver within a team environment.
  • Good customer relationship skills.
  • Ability to deal with people across a wide range of management levels and technical expertise, including external organisations, plant management and commercial functions.
  • Degree qualified in science / engineering / project management or an equivalent combination of qualification and experience.

  • SC level security clearance (or the ability to be).
  • Proven track record in delivering complex multi-disciplinary projects to time, cost and quality.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of engineering, radiochemical and safety issues applicable to Windscale Plant
  • Monitored radiation worker.
  • APM qualification for project management.
