Job Description for Project Manager:

NNL is where your project management helps deliver our purpose. As part of our Project Management Authority, you’ll play a critical role in managing projects that deliver nuclear science to benefit society. Your project management skills and attention to detail will enable industry-leading scientists, engineers and analysts to work together to deliver unique projects using cutting edge technology. It’s a challenging role but it’s an opportunity to grow, adapt and develop new skills in a fast-moving area.

The Project Manager will be responsible for delivering projects safely and to the agreed level of quality, schedule and cost in a manner that complies with the NNL’s defined delivery framework and full compliance with all NNL policies. 

The role will be full time based primarily at Workington Lab but some time will be based at Central Laboratory (Sellafield Site) and some travel to other NNL sites will be required. The role will be associated with the delivery of Sellafield Ltd projects in the Spent Fuel Management workstream (SIXEP support and Plant Encapsulation Projects) The Project Manager will require flexibility in their role and will have opportunity to manage a wide variety of projects, in different areas of the NNL business.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Project Manager:

  • Development and management of project teams, identifying, addressing and resolving differences between individuals and/or interest groups.
  • Consolidating and documenting the fundamental components of projects (scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, opportunities and issues, and quality requirements).
  • Supporting the preparation, approval, refining and updating of business case that justify the initiation and/or continuation of projects in terms of benefits, costs and risks.
  • Preparing and maintaining project requirements. Determining the best means of satisfying requirements within the context of project objectives and constraints i.e. developing solutions.
  • Supporting the production of project proposals, including approval through the appropriate governance stages.
  • Securing the provision of resources needed for projects from internal and/or external providers. Developing, implementing and updating resources allocations plans.
  • Developing and agreeing budgets for projects and controlling forecast and actual costs against them.
  • Supporting the preparation and maintaining schedules for project activities and events, taking account of dependencies and resource requirements.
  • Identifying and monitoring project risks (threats and opportunities), planning and implementing responses to them and responding to other issues that affect projects.
  • Maintaining and applying quality management processes for project activities and outputs.
  • Implementing where necessary, protocols to change the scope of projects and updating configuration documents as required.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Project Manager:

  • Relevant experience within an industrial environment, preferably nuclear.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver within a team environment.
  • Proven excellent customer relationship skills.
  • Ability to deal with people across a wide range of management levels and technical expertise, including external organisations, plant management and commercial functions.
  • Proven record of problem solving and the ability to negotiate solutions to allow safe and efficient operations.
  • Proven track record in delivering complex tasks to time, cost and quality.
  • Ability to travel between sites/customers (Full Driving License Essential).
  • Project Management professional qualification (e.g. APMP, Diploma APM, IPMA Level D) or working towards.
  • Ability to obtain BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks).

Desirable Criteria for Project Manager:

  • Ability to utilise project scheduling software for the purposes of controlling and monitoring project works, e.g. MS Project.
  • Demonstrable financial acumen and experience of using financial monitoring & performance tools / processes.
  • Use of Microsoft Office – Work, Excel, Power-point. 
  • SC level security clearance (or the ability to be).
