Job Introduction

As part of our Fuel Reactor & Reprocessing capability, you’ll play a vital role in developing the UK fuel cycle in line with advances in new technology and new processes. As old reactors reach the end of their lifespan, we need experts like you, with the technical skills to virtually model scenarios that not only enable us to explore new ways of managing the inputs and outputs of reactors, but also pave the way for the implementation of smaller, cleaner revolutionary new reactors. As the national laboratory for nuclear fission in the UK, we are harnessing nuclear science to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. 

NNL is looking for a laboratory-based scientist or engineer to support work in an alpha-active capability. In this role you will focus on maintaining the UK’s capability to support the needs of the current nuclear industry and develop the skills required to support the NDA in its Pu Disposition project. 

You will work alongside new, exciting opportunities - such as the Alpha Resilience & Capability (ARC) programme and the European Space Agency in their own missions. This is of strategic importance aiding the UK Government’s aspirations whilst aligning with NNL’s purpose to resolve problematic nuclear waste challenges to save the UK £1bn per year.

Your role in the Reactor Core Technology Team, will support NNL’s ambition to develop unique laboratory scale alpha radioactive facilities based on fundamental nuclear fuel pellet manufacturing processes. You will work alongside the Technical Lead by providing technical support in a key area of development at NNL’s Central lab, based at Sellafield.

To join the NNL Post Doctorate programme you will have a PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. 

You will have the right to work in the UK and be able to achieve DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 10 years’ worth of UK residency).

In this role you will support the delivery of technical programmes of work to the customer on time, to cost and to satisfactory quality, working closely with project managers and providing technical guidance and advice as required. You will be required to work to high degrees of accuracy and with fixed timelines to meet the customer timescales, through a combination of experimental work, assisting with scope development, report writing & checking, preparation of safety documentation and liaising with the Capability Manager to satisfy capability demands.

Your responsibilities will include:  

• Delivering technical work to the satisfaction of an individual customer with delivery to time, cost and quality
• Fostering and maintaining key relationships (internal and external) to ensure effective and efficient project delivery
• Providing technical support to projects involving pellet manufacturing and ensuring the delivery of high-quality outputs
• Keeping abreast of the latest technical developments in the fields which are relevant to the project
• Ensuring that work undertaken is effective to answer the customer’s needs and outputs and meet NNL and customer standards
• Complying with all legislative, regulatory and company policies and procedures appropriate to the role 
• Supporting with pre-operations activities such as preparation of safety paperwork and preparation of operating instructions

Your two-year scheme will provide the opportunity to develop your technical knowledge and skills whilst providing you with an insight into NNL’s strategy and direction. You will receive an overview of how the company operates and delivers its projects.
