Post Doctorate Scheme 2024 - Corrosion Engineer

Job Introduction

As the national laboratory for nuclear fission in the UK, we are harnessing nuclear science to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. 

NNL is looking for a Post Doctorate with a scientific background in chemistry and corrosion studies to join the Reactor Chemistry and Corrosion team based in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. The team deliver commercial R&D to help solve a wide range of chemistry and corrosion-based challenges in the nuclear industry. The group supports strategic programmes across the industry, as well as providing advice on strategic UK issues. Much of the work directly supports plant operation, lifetime extension and support to new build programmes. 

To join the NNL Post Doctorate programme you will have a PhD in Chemistry, Corrosion, Materials Science or another relevant science.

You will have the right to work in the UK and be able to achieve SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Role Responsibility

We are developing the next generation of technical experts. Not only will you receive the opportunity to work on challenging and exciting projects, but you’ll continually learn from skilled and knowledgeable industry experts who are leaders in their field. We will help you become everything you can be, by challenging, stretching, and pushing you to your limits while supporting you every step of the way.

You will undertake laboratory-based work at NNL laboratory space at the University of Bristol on a range of civil and defence nuclear materials projects. You will work as part of a team solving materials challenges not only for different reactor types, but also for different stages of the nuclear life cycle. There will also be an emphasis on high temperature, high pressure water corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking, alongside corrosion experiments using high temperature gas.  

You will support the advancement of nuclear science through NNL’s Science and Technology programme. 

In this role you will be: 

  • Working flexibly as part of a specialist team 
  • Delivering internal and external customer projects to time, in budget, and to required Environmental, Health, Safety, Security and Quality (EHSS&Q) standards
  • Performing corrosion work in support of customer work, making use of the facilities available to NNL staff working collaboratively with the University of Bristol
  • Develop the ability to design and set-up environmentally assisted cracking experiments to generate corrosion data
  • Authoring, reviewing and approving technical documents including; calculations notes and spreadsheets, reports, presentations and open literature journal articles
  • Presenting the work performed for customers at project meetings and National and International conferences
  • Ad-hoc problem solving to resolve day to day technical challenges 
  • Engaging with technical experts across NNL, looking to support their work and vice-versa
  • Mentoring and supporting junior colleagues in their professional and technical development

Your two-year scheme will provide the opportunity to develop your technical knowledge and skills whilst providing you with an insight into NNL’s strategy and direction. You will receive an overview of how the company operates and delivers its projects. 

You will undertake personal development through training aligned to your personal development plan and understand your strengths, weaknesses, and behaviours. You will receive a personal budget to support your development within your field of expertise.

From day one you’ll have a role in a technical team involved in delivering real customer projects. You will have direct sight of the value that your skills and knowledge have to our industry and by extension our society. The Postdoctoral Development Scheme runs alongside your role, providing you the space and skills to develop in a commercial environment whilst helping you decide how to advance your technical expertise.

You will be based at our Stonehouse Laboratory in Gloucestershire, with access to facilities at the University of Bristol. 

As part of the selection process for the Post Doctorate programme you will complete a Technical Interview against the skills and competencies required for this role.
