Operations and Technical Support Assistant

Job Introduction

NNL’s Electron Optics team operates world class active electron microscope facilities, delivering work for a range of internal and external customers. The team provides information on fuel and reactor material performance, supporting the operation of nuclear facilities.

The role supports the team’s active laboratory operations. This includes the preparation of active samples, characterisation of material using electron microscopes (e.g. SEM) and production of technical reports for customers. The role holder will also provide input to new project proposals and coordinate work through the active preparation laboratory.

Role Responsibility

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide input to project proposals to assist with the accurate costing and planning of work.
  • Act as area owner for the electron optics preparation laboratory, ensuring that house-keeping meets the required standards.
  • Coordinate the production and revision of safe system of work documentation to ensure that all work activities are appropriately covered.
  • Act as a safety supervisor for the laboratory, to ensure that all work is undertaken safely and in line with NNL procedures.
  • Provide input to safety case requirements to enable new work streams to be carried out in the laboratory (including acting as PMP manager to coordinate delivery where required).
  • Coordinate work through the laboratory through interaction with appropriate stakeholders, maximising delivery against project requirements.
  • Undertake the preparation, measurement and analysis of samples, delivering materials and results to meet customer requirements.
  • Produce technical reports, summarising results to meet customer requirements (internal & external).
  • Supervise and develop the skills of less experienced team members, to increase operational flexibility.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • HNC/HND in an appropriate scientific discipline (chemistry/materials/physics).
  • Significant experience (at least 4-5 years) working in active laboratories under safe system of work documentation and quality management standards.
  • Significant experience (at least 4-5 years) in the preparation of active samples and basic operation of electron microscopes (e.g. SEM).
  • Classified radiation worker (or the ability to become so).
  • SC clearance (or the ability to become so).  Therefore, must be a British National
  • Communication skills and stakeholder management - the successful candidate will interface with a wide range of customers, both internal and external throughout the organisation.
