Mechanical Design Engineer / Technologist

Job Introduction

The Remote Engineering Team is a multi-disciplined technical team delivering fit for purpose solutions to their customers within the nuclear industry. The team provides a full range of services including the design, development and deployment of purpose built, remotely operable, intervention and inspection systems for use in the nuclear industry. In addition we design, manufacture and operate inactive test rigs and mockups for proof of principal trials of equipment and processes.

The Mechanical Design Engineer / Technologist will be responsible for providing innovative high quality electro-mechanical systems and test rigs to customers and across the NNL business, in the areas of:-

  • Scheme design, detail design and calculations for mechanical systems and test rigs
  • Mechanical engineering consultancy and support
  • Systems, equipment and test rig build, test, commission and operation

    Requirement to travel is expected, between NNL locations and customer locations.

Role Responsibility

Provide mechanical engineering design, development, consultancy and support to projects in the following areas:-

  • Production of 3D and 2D detailed design drawings utilising a 3D CAD design package (preferably Solid Works) and 2D CAD design package (preferably AutoCAD LT)
  • Production of design support calculations
  • Checking of design drawings and calculations
  • Working with Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineers to produce integrated system scopes, designs and products
  • Liaison with suppliers and manufacturers to optimise the design and manufacture process
  • Initiation and progression of the procurement process through to delivery and inspection
  • Involvement with the build, installation, commissioning and operational support of plant based equipment and inactive development test rigs
  • Development of prototype equipment and processes through to supply of end products
  • Provision of mechanical engineering consultancy and support for remotely operable systems and equipment for the nuclear industry
  • Preparation of product safety related documentation, e.g. risk assessments, method statements, PUWER assessments, O&M manuals and technical files
  • Production of technical reports
  • Design, installation and commission of inactive test rig building services
  • Survey and document plant based equipment and systems including building services
  • Provision of technical supervision for technician and craft personnel
  • Keep abreast with the latest trends and developments in engineering. Ensure that these developments are shared and applied as appropriate
  • Assist with the team’s technical work by contributing to technical programmes and deliverables
  • Maintain customer relationships to ensure long term contracts/work
  • Travel to other sites in order to attend project and customer meetings
  • Interface with other NNL capabilities as required
  • Report to Business Manager regarding progress and risks on projects

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

•Degree in Mechanical Engineering and relevant level of experience.

•Expertise in detail design and development of systems and equipment for use in the nuclear industry

•Experience with 3D CAD design packages, preferably Solid Works

•Knowledge of the legislative and regulatory requirements relating to engineering product development projects and CE marking

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills, such that difficult concepts can be conveyed clearly and concisely to customers, regulators and key stakeholders.

•Questioning attitude.

•Evidence of problem solving and seeking solutions

 

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

•Postgraduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related subjects

•Knowledge of nuclear industry and plant operation

•Strong and supportive team player

•Self-motivated, high energy contributor

•IOSH managing safely

• Membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, or equivalent
