Health Physics Surveyor

Job Introduction

Role Description

The Windscale Laboratory is an active handling and inspection facility which comprises a number of heavily shielded cells with remote operations enabling the handling, transfer, preparation and inspection of highly active materials.

The role of the Health Physics Surveyor is to ensure the continued radiological safe working conditions of plant and personnel.

The successful applicant will be expected to use their skills and experience to perform this role with a view to carrying out Supervisory duties as and when required.

Role Responsibility

Duties:

  • Provide Health Physics support to a variety of operational tasks.
  • To continually monitor and assess radiological conditions on plant.
  • Carrying out routine and special radiation protection control surveys whilst providing accurate records of the work undertaken.
  • Ability to communicate to all levels the concepts of radiation protection from both external and internal modes of exposure.
  • To provide support to investigations when required, particularly on radiological matters.
  • To work in physically demanding environments in a variety of Respiratory and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • To be experienced in the use of a wide variety of radiation protection instrumentation.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, site licensee and corporate requirements.
  • To respond and provide radiological emergency cover.
  • Identify and undertake improvements in radiological safety practices.
  • Work covering a range of radiological conditions e.g. the detection and assessment of  α, β, γ, βγ and η emitters.
  • Responding to radiological alarms, taking appropriate actions and logging events.
  • Complete Clearance for transfer of radiological items i.e. flasks and waste items as well as non-radiological items.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • City and Guilds Stage 1 or equivalent in Radiation Safety Practice
  • Classified worker with experience in a radioactive environment.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Access proficient.
  • High level of mathematical competency.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Possess Good interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member
