To join the NNL graduate programme you will have graduated, or be on course to graduate with a 2:1 or higher in Software Development, Software Engineering or a related degree.
You will have the right to work in the UK, have lived in the UK for at least 5 years and be able to achieve SC level security clearance.
You will be naturally curious with the drive and determination to discover more – about yourself and our business.

You will have excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
As a member of the Software Development team you will help us develop software solutions to support the nuclear industry. You need to be enthusiastic about being involved in all aspects of software development, and enjoy the challenge that developing a wide range of bespoke applications will bring. Applications such as a digital twin to support plant operations; secure databases to ensure safe control of nuclear material, user friendly SharePoint sites to help HR to ensure they can plan out the future generations of nuclear experts. You will help us identify new technologies and undertake R&D to ensure we can maximise the benefit our work can bring to the nuclear industry.
Most of the work is undertaken in groups working within an Agile framework in which you would be expected to contribute to all stages from undertaking feasibility studies, through system design, build, test and deploy, and finally ongoing support. Our software solutions vary from SharePoint applications, desktop applications for scientific calculations and hardware interfacing, business web application and enterprise (B2B) cloud webservices. You will be contributing to our team from right at the beginning of your career working on customer project, with training provided as necessary, and learning on the job through working alongside existing experts in our the team.
As a member of the Graduate programme, you will develop towards taking a lead role in our research and development projects with the support of our experienced early careers team, your line manager, mentor, colleagues, and fellow graduates.
You will acquire a depth of knowledge and specific technical skills in a particular area of our business. You will experience the full life cycle of our projects; from liaising with customers to understand their needs, planning work and developing new methods and processes, to documenting your work effectively in technical reports.
As a Software Developer you will support the delivery of customer work through the design, development and testing of IT software and provide support to existing software. You will work with your customers to understand their requirements, provide clear documentation, and develop high quality software for use across the nuclear industry.
Our Graduate scheme and dedicated early careers team will support you whilst you work in our technical teams.
Your programme starts with a tailored, induction programme to welcome you into the business and to get to know your graduate cohort. The Induction will help you understand the breadth of what NNL does and to provide an overview of your development programme and our expectations.
You will then embark on your two-year graduate scheme undertaking a programme of activities designed to help you develop your understanding of the nuclear industry and grow as an individual, these include;
- Understanding NNL, the nuclear sector and nuclear professionalism
- The application of professional knowledge and skill
- Personal development and understanding your own personal brand
- Collaboration and team working
- Understanding our customer and making effective decisions
You will complete your programme with a focussed training centre to support your seamless transition off the scheme to continue your career with NNL.
As part of the selection process for the graduate programme you should expect to complete online cognitive ability assessments. Successful candidates will be invited to attend a virtual interview which will assess technical and behavioural competencies.
You will start your graduate programme on the 5th September 2022. This role can be based in Risley, Cheshire or Workington, Cumbria.
