Endoscope Capability Manager

Job Introduction

The Post Irradiation Evaluation (PIE) capability supports several large (~£15M), long-term projects on behalf of NNL’s major customers. The projects provide information on fuel and reactor material performance, supporting the ongoing operation of the UK reactor fleet.

Our expert team offers a unique capability in the field of Post Irradiation Evaluation.  We develop, deploy and maintain spent fuel underwater examination equipment, within a highly active environment, using specialist designed equipment. The team is based out of Workington Laboratory, but undertakes underwater spent fuel examinations on site at EDF-Energy Nuclear Power Stations.

NNL is looking for a high calibre, motivated individual to manage a customer focused team based at Workington. The team works closely with teams from other NNL locations in providing a coordinated service to the customer.

The candidate will be responsible for managing the delivery and reporting of endoscopy surveys. The portfolio of work is focused on customer needs to support current and future operational strategies.  The team has a strong track record of working closely with customers and other experts within NNL. 

The candidate will work closely with the Capability Managers within the PIE and Materials and Corrosion capabilities. To manage the team successfully the suitable candidate must:

  • Have the ability to maximise and develop the team’s potential, with a clear vision for the team.
  • Ensure clear line of sight of all safety responsibility and the availability of resource to support delivery.
  • Maintain strong work relationships with customers and all touchpoints throughout the organisation.

The successful candidate is expected to go on several (~4) surveys a year (one survey is up to 13 days). While away at survey the capability manger is expected to be part of the team assembling, operating and controlling inspection equipment used to undertake this survey work.

Role Responsibility

1. EHSS&Q Accountabilities:

The Capability Manager (CM) will be accountable for EHSS&Q within their team:

• Duty of care for all staff identified

• Ownership and safe operations of equipment and facilities

• Delivery of projects, programs and technical work

• Delivery of the EHSS&Q Improvement and Assurance Plan

2. Capability Accountabilities:

The CM will be accountable for all resources within their team:

• Staff: Leadership, performance, SQEP, development, technical training, progression and recruitment

• Equipment: maintenance, renewal, disposal, repair, inspection, access and utilisation

• Leads on customer delivery, exceling in delivering customer value and building a customer-centric culture

3. Budget Control Accountabilities:

The CM will support the Capability Leader for all budgetary control associated with their team and will be measured against budget control through KPI’s:

• Staff costs including, recruitment, training, progression, T&S. R&R

• Equipment costs maintenance, renewal, disposal, repair, inspection, access and utilisation

4. Customer Delivery Accountabilities:

The CM will be accountable for all customer delivery associated with their team:

• Work within NNL to engage with customer to maximise all business opportunities

• Technical excellence in customer delivery

• Technical resolution of equipment issues

5. Leadership Accountabilities:

The CM will be accountable for cultural and business strategies associated with their team:

• Development of the team in line with business requirements, recognising technical advancements

• Quality of results and customer delivery

• People performance, development and cultural change

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills / Qualifications

  • A relevant science degree (e.g. chemistry, materials, mathematics or physics) or an equivalent level of relevant experience.
  • Positive attitude to learning and supporting the wider development of the team
  • Ability to become SC cleared
