Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (E,C&I) Engineer

Job Introduction

Remote Engineering Design & Robotics Team is a multi-disciplined technical team located at the NNL Workington Laboratory in Cumbria. We supply bespoke remote handling equipment, tooling, and inspection systems for all aspects of remote operations plant intervention work in the nuclear industry. The Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (E,C&I) Engineer will work in the supply of remotely deployed equipment for use in active plant, underwater operations, radioactive waste size reduction & processing and decommissioning. The NNL is also at the forefront of research and development into the use of robotics and autonomous systems in the nuclear industry and opportunities exist for you to be involved in this pioneering work. In addition the E,C&I Engineer will also be involved in the design, build and operation of inactive test rigs to prove new technology, equipment and processes prior to deployment in active nuclear plant environments.

Working with multi-disciplined engineers and scientists the E,C&I Engineer can expect to be involved in some or all of the following activities:

  • The design, build, test, development, commissioning and on-site deployment of industrial control panels, electrical equipment of machinery and instrumentation systems for use on bespoke remote handling equipment, tooling and inspection systems for all aspects of remote operations plant intervention work in the nuclear industry.
  • The design, development and construction of industrial control panels, electrical equipment of machinery and instrumentation systems for use on inactive test rigs to prove new technology, equipment and processes prior to deployment in active nuclear plant environments.
  • The operation of inactive test rig trials to client specifications, collating trials results, analysing data and the generation of technical reports.
  • The innovative use of advanced technologies in Robotics, Remotely Operated Vehicles, etc. and development of engineered solutions to a range of robotic and tele-operational challenges.
  • Exposure to novel academic research in order to progress the technology into an engineered and developed solution suitable for nuclear industry applications.

Role Responsibility

  1. Use of AutoCAD 2D CAD design package for production of 2D detailed design drawings and schematics to the appropriate drawing standards for control panels, electrical equipment of machinery and instrumentation.
  2. Detailed technical and design calculations.
  3. Involvement with the build, installation, commissioning and operational support of plant based equipment and inactive development test rigs.
  4. Development of prototype equipment and processes through to supply of end products.
  5. Preparation of product safety related documentation, e.g. risk assessments, method statements, operation & maintenance manuals.
  6. Comply with all legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the role, including those required for CE marking.
  7. To provide electrical, control & instrumentation engineering consultancy and support for remotely operable systems and equipment for the nuclear industry.
  8. Liaison with suppliers and manufacturers, initiation and progression of the procurement process including production of procurement specifications through to delivery and inspection.
  9. Production of technical reports.
  10. Design, installation and commission of inactive test rig electrical building services.
  11. Survey and document plant based equipment and systems including electrical building services.
  12. Provide technical advice and guidance on issues appropriate to their working area.
  13. Keep abreast of developments in their own field and applying them to designated work packages.
  14. Travel to other sites in order to attend project and customer meetings.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering or closely related subject and a relevant level of experience.
  • Experience with 2D CAD design packages, preferable AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge and experience of applying the legislative and regulatory requirements relating to engineering product development projects and CE marking.
  • A working knowledge of the relevant safety legislation and quality and environmental standards.
  • IOSH Working Safely.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplined team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Problem solving, questioning attitude and solution seeking skills.
  • Proactive approach to maintaining high safety and quality standards.

 

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer, or working towards Chartered Engineer, with the IET
  • Knowledge of nuclear industry and plant operations.
  • Experience in the development and operation of remote operations equipment.
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • Capability of attaining Workington Lab Project Safety Supervisor role.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Strong and supportive team player.
  • Self-motivated, high energy contributor.
  • Good organisational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work and research independently.
