Corrosion Scientist

Job Introduction

NNL has provided corrosion expertise to Sellafield for over 30 years, especially in nitric acid corrosion for stainless steels, notably through the use of the HALES rig and lab based experimental work. The current subject matter expert is reaching a nominal retirement age, their succession currently only resides in one person, hence there is an urgent need to develop the next generation of expertise.

Role Responsibility

  • Working flexibly as part of a specialist team to provide focused R&D solutions to solve corrosion related challenges to Sellafield customers, including nitric acid corrosion for stainless steels and the management of spent nuclear fuels
  • Deliver internal and external customer projects to time, in budget, and to required environmental, health, safety, security and quality (EHSS&Q) standards
  • Performing experimental techniques in support of customer work
  • Authorship, checking and approval of technical documents (calculations notes, technical memos, technical reports and open literature journal articles) 
  • Presenting work performed to customers, project meetings and at international conferences
  • Ad-hoc problem solving to resolve day to day technical challenges that emerge
  • Engaging with technical experts across NNL, looking to support their work and vice-versa 

The Ideal Candidate

Essential skills:

  • PhD in in corrosion science or relevant scientific discipline 
  • Strong experimental/laboratory skills including experimental design expertise
  • Adept in the preparation of high-quality technical reports
  • Flexible approach to project delivery, and provision of support to both the team and wider organisation where required
  • Positive attitude to safety, security and other EHSSQ requirements
  • Ability to work well with multidisciplinary teams across the organisation
  • UK national or UK resident for 5+ years with ability to obtain security clearance (SC)

Desirable skills:

  • Ability to disseminate technical information to non-specialist audiences
  • Experience of corrosion testing and electrochemical techniques 
  • Experience in working with industrial customers to ensure good future working relationships
  • Specific knowledge relating different to stainless steel corrosion mechanisms (nitric acid intergranular corrosion, pitting/crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking)
  • Good understanding of the effect of material and metallurgical properties on corrosion behaviour
