The Communications Manager will identify rich content in NNL and opportunities and channels to deliver quality communications that showcase the science, technology and innovation at our core; to enhance our reputation for delivering nuclear science that benefits society.
A keen interest in Science and Technology, they will lead communication of our science and technology working closely with the VP Science and Technology; maximising content through creation of integrated plans that reach a variety of audiences – internally and externally – whilst working as part of an integrated comms team to reflect NNL strategy and ambitions.
From developing strategies, sourcing stories and creating compelling science communication, to managing our communications channels and roadmaps; this is a varied role that will play a key part telling NNL’s story.
The location for this role is flexible and can be based at Risley, Preston, Sellafield, Workington or Culham.
Main Responsibilities for Communications Manager:
- Development and deliver communications strategy, which amplifies NNL’s science and technology capabilities consistently across all internal and external communications channels.
- Define and deliver an integrated communications plan to communicate key science and technology areas in NNL.
- Be a proactive and enthusiastic member of the NNL comms and public affairs team and develop strong relationships with the S&T community.
- Identify rich content from within the organisation; and use this to write, edit, design and deliver engaging content for distribution across a variety of internal and external communications channels.
- Define clear and consistent communication messages for a variety internal and external audiences, based on sound understanding of target audience groups.
- Create high-quality and creative campaigns to showcase the variety of science, technology and innovation delivered by our organisation to a variety of audiences.
- Drive innovation in science comms by identifying and developing new ways to engage a variety of audiences in science.
- Deliver a strong and timely pipeline of planned communication activity that provides proof points to reinforce NNL’s strategy and focus areas and ensure NNL is visible to the right stakeholders.
- Lead production of key science engagement activities and publications, including our NuClear Science: Webcast series, case studies, reports, videos and articles to name a few.
- Demonstrate effective engagement through development of regular reports that evaluate activity and monitor progress; and provides insight that informs our direction and demonstrates the value of science communication.
Essential Criteria for Communications Manager:
- Experience in technical and or scientific environments, with ability to define clear and consistent messages; taking complex content to simple effective communications.
- Experience of delivering strategic communications plans and multi - channel communication campaigns; internally and externally.
- Experience of leading multiple communications projects in a busy team with the ability to handle competing deadlines.
- Creative writing skills with the ability to develop human, engaging copy that connects with its audiences.
- Organisation skills and experience of managing communications roadmaps and plans.
- Good influencing and communication skills
- Experience working with suppliers, providing detailed briefings and guidance to lead to production of engaging content and events.
- Ability to build a wide range of good working relationships across professional and operational boundaries and at all levels, including senior management and external stakeholders.
- Experience of evaluating impact of communications activity through quantitative and qualitative methods.
- Demonstrable experience in communications roles.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

- Scientific degree.
