An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Chemical Analyst in the Measurement and Analysis team. This role holder will be responsible for the technical delivery of laboratory work as well as development into technical lead within the M&A capability at time where the capability has the potential to transform into a leading Analytical & Characterisation Laboratory in the UK.
This is an important role working closely with NNL Technical Leads developing and operating analytical methods in support of a wide range of projects. This will require interaction with a range of internal and external customers. The successful candidate should have a Degree or PhD in chemistry (or similar) and/or have significant experience of working within a laboratory-based environment.
The position will primarily support customer projects by identification of requirements, writing proposals for research and other customer work, providing experimental data, data analysis and technical report writing. You will be required to work in fumehoods and gloveboxes, within an active area laboratory environment providing high quality analysis. As part of the role you will be expected to interface with a few other NNL capabilities ensuring cross-team communication. Travel to customer or supplier sites may also be required.
- Provides direct support to the Team Manager or Technical Lead.
- Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.
- The candidate must be able to work in a small team or on their own on projects.
- Complies with legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the role.
- Ensures all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied by all staff.
- Carry out work within the laboratory in accordance with laboratory safety procedures and instructions.
- Preparation of laboratory permission paperwork.
- Ensures detailed work records are maintained in accordance with laid down procedures.
- Participates in the preparation of technical reports and assessments within agreed timescales.
- Provision of analytical service to internal/external customers to agreed standards.
- Interprets instructions and produces good quality output safely and to time.
- Provides technical information, checking validity and records within appropriate guidelines.
- Analyse and troubleshoot equipment operability, technical queries and performance issues.
- Interface with a few other NNL capabilities.
- Keep abreast of developments in his/her field.
- Where appropriate, develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company.
- Works within budgetary limits.
- Motivates and provides guidance to others.
The Ideal Candidate
- A Bachelor’s degree or PhD in Chemistry/science-based discipline.
- Detailed knowledge and experience of analytical instrumentation operations. Ideally 3 or more of the following; ICP-MS, ICP-OES, alpha spectroscopy, alpha/beta counting, Liquid Scintillation Counting and Gamma Spectroscopy.
- Experience of analytical data analysis including uncertainty calculations and quality control.
- High technical standards for all deliverables and project outputs.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate scientific messages with accuracy and clarity.
- Contribute to the running of complex projects with constructive ideas.
- Experience of laboratory safety paperwork including COSHH, Risk Assessments and facility work requests.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise work.
- Good troubleshooting skills
- Enhanced security clearance (at least SC) or a willingness to undertake further security clearance.
- Experience of working within active area fumehoods and/or gloveboxes.
- Understanding of the requirements of ISO 17025 and operation of a UKAS-accredited quality system.
