The Senior Technical Support Officer is accountable and responsible for the management and supervision of the NNL Facilities on the Sellafield Site ensuring that the arrangements for all Facilities, under their management, comply with all relevant environmental, health, safety, security and management system requirements in order to allow occupancy by people.

Primarily being accountable for ensuring NNL’s compliance with a number of requirements and regulations governing the nuclear industry and its relevant Site Licence Conditions and at this grade they will act as the lead appointed person for a number of key roles. 

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Senior Technical Support Officer (Building Manager):

  • Act as Building Manager to the NNL’s Windscale Laboratory and Central Laboratory ensuring compliance with several legal requirements and regulations governing the nuclear industry and its relevant Site Licence Conditions.
  • Act as lead responsible person for major key compliance roles including, but not exclusively: 
    • Fire Responsible Person.
    • Legionella Responsible Person.
    • Asbestos Co-ordinator.
    • Building Controller.
  • Ensure all Risk Assessments and Management Plans are managed for all facilities falling under their management control.
  • Provide support to the Laboratory Emergency Response Teams.
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations.
  • Line Management of two Technical Support Officers.
  • Ensure building control points and welfare facilities are maintained in a state of continual readiness.
  • Check compliance of Safe Systems of Work procedures and report/initiate any necessary remedial action for their areas of responsibility and provide advice and guidance on issues appropriate to operational documentation and associated Safe Systems of Work.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and control of all relevant documentation e.g. procedures and guidance within their area of responsibility.
  • Conduct audits and observations to monitor standards and affect remedial action where necessary.
  • Act as Originator and Task Supervisor for relevant work.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Senior Technical Support Officer (Building Manager):

  • Experience of Building Management including control of Asbestos, Legionella and acting as Fire Responsible Person.
  • Qualified in P405 Asbestos Management of Asbestos in Buildings.
  • BOHS Legionella Responsible Person Qualified. 
  • GCSEs or equivalent in Maths, English and Science.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills especially for spreadsheets, databases and word processing.
  • Demonstrable organisation skills.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Senior Technical Support Officer (Building Manager):

  • Experience of working in the nuclear sector.
  • Experience of outside compliance systems or writing and reviewing safe systems of work and associated documentation. 
  • IOSH Working Safely or higher. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
