Laboratory-Based Technicians (Post Irradiation Examination)

Job Introduction

The Post Irradiation Evaluation (PIE) team supports a number of large, long-term projects on behalf of several of NNL’s major customers. The team provides information on the performance of reactor materials supporting the ongoing operation of a range of UK Nuclear Reactors. The roles are primarily based at our Windscale Laboratory, but may also include periods of time at our other Laboratories and at our customer sites.

The role offers the opportunity to work within a successful team and gain skills in remote inspections, reporting and analysis of irradiated materials.  It offers the right candidates the opportunity to develop into a supervisory role.

Role Responsibility

  • Undertake remote examinations, including the use of digital photography and micro/macroscopy.
  • Operate and maintain remote experimental equipment used to measure the physical dimensions and properties of irradiated samples.
  • Initial analysis, reporting and independent verification of results.
  • Troubleshoot equipment operations problems both technical and performance issues.
  • Support the development of new equipment and techniques for measurement and analysis of materials.
  • Maintain logbooks, data files and record sheets for sample testing and traceability.
  • Input measurement data into spreadsheets.
  • Ensure all work is completed in a timely manner whilst always ensuring safety and quality are maintained.
  • Communicate (verbal and written) with all levels of staff across teams.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s grade C or above including Mathematics, English and a Science subject.
  • Proven ability to perform tasks safely within defined timescales and in accordance with quality management standards
  • Proven ability to conform with appropriate Safe Systems of Work
  • IT literate
  • You will be expected to undertake training to become a classified radiation worker
  • Manual dexterity to operate remote handling devices
  • Due to the nature of our work, some of these roles may only be undertaken by UK Nationals
