Plant Engineer (Instrumentation)

Job Introduction

Subject to the required skills and appointments, the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall be responsible for ensuring that all instrumentation declared within the facility safety case are maintained and proof tested as per schedule, all normal plant equipment has sufficient maintenance and any breakdowns are dealt with efficiently to minimise down time to the Business.

They shall provide assurance that all activities within their area(s) of responsibility are being undertaken in a safe and compliant manner, so as to meet all requirements of the Nuclear Site Licence and all Regulatory and Legislative purposes.

Role Responsibility

  • Planning of Resources: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall be responsible for analysing the resource requirements for all emerging work that impacts upon their area(s) of responsibility. They shall be responsible for providing forecasts of manning levels due to leave, sickness and training. They shall be responsible for ensuring that people, materials, tools and equipment required by the team are readily available. They shall flag up any issues of significance that could impact upon delivery or availability of plant to the Electrical Maintenance Manager immediately and be responsible for initiating any corrective action.
  • Safe Delivery of work: Subject to the required skills and appointments, the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) is responsible for ensuring the delivery of work within their area(s) of responsibility complies with all Site specific requirements and plant and personnel are operating within the safety envelope.
  • Undertaking Pre Job Briefs: Subject to the required skills and appointments the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall be responsible for ensuring that prior to any task commencing, a suitable and sufficient Pre Job Brief has been delivered to the Doers. They shall ensure that the outcome is recorded to confirm understanding by all concerned.
  • Undertaking a Post Job Review: Subject to the required skills and appointments the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall ensure that upon completion of work, a suitable and sufficient Post Job Review has been undertaken and any Learning From Experience (LFE) gathered is incorporated into the Risk Assessment for future tasks.
  • Rules, Procedures and Instructions: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) is responsible for ensuring rules, procedures and instructions are in place & that they are clear and unambiguous, accessible in the workplace and understood by all team members.
  • Visibility in the workplace: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) will ensure visibility in the workplace proactively monitoring standards through task observations and providing support / advice as necessary to team members
  • Ensure Effective Handover: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall ensure effective handover and hand back arrangements for transfer of information are in place with Technical Support as and when applicable.
  • Ensure Individual Training: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) is responsible for ensuring that their individual training takes place to agreed standards and timescales.
  • Interface with Mechanical / Electrical Engineers: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall be the primary interface with the Plant Engineer (Electrical and/or Mechanical) on any plant modifications or improvements that cross between disciplines, ensuring that accountabilities are clearly understood with no detriment to overall control and supervision of the task.
  • Undertake role of Person Organising Work (POW): the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) will undertake the role of POW in accordance with the SQEP role assessment, ensuring that all maintenance and breakdown tasks are covered by an appropriate safe system of work which is adhered to at all times. To complete maintenance under their responsibility the engineer is to also be a Sub Contractor Supervisor to allow external contractors to be brought in and managed.
  • Infrastructure Compliance Documentation: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall be responsible as Owner for the upkeep and control of all Infrastructure Compliance owned maintenance procedures and instructions relevant to their area(s) of responsibility.
  • Records Management: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall ensure correct management of all documentation associated with their area(s) of responsibility ensuring accurate records are maintained securely as per record retention procedures for any future reference.
  • Sharing of Best Practice: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall attend any Forums (internal and external) as requested to keep abreast of best practice around other facilities. They shall be responsible for sharing and implementation of any learning around their own area(s) of responsibility.
  • Proactive in Continuous Improvement: the Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) shall promote best practice within the team by for example actively participating in Operational Experience Feedback (OEF) briefs or tool box talks.
  • Promote standards and expectations : The Plant Engineer (Instrumentation) is responsible for promoting standards & expectations of behaviour and performance, ensuring team members understand their accountabilities and what is expected of them, taking action to address shortcomings.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills:

  • Degree Qualified (electrical discipline) or HND in an equivalent discipline. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of stated qualifications.
  • Holds an electrical or instrumentation craft apprenticeship.
  • Provide evidence of having initiative and ability to plan and direct own work and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate key information both verbal and written with customers, suppliers and stakeholders
  • Evidence of self-motivation with demonstrable levels of drive, energy and resilience.
  • Ability to demonstrate correct and informed decision making, even in pressure situations
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the operational & maintenance requirements associated with their area(s) of control
  • Ability to interface on a technical levelĀ  with Design Team & Delivery Operations
  • Ability to learn and use the various building management systems within the building

Desirable Skills

  • Requirement to become appointed as a Vents and Services DAP as applicable
  • Requirement to become appointed as a Person Organising Work (POW)
  • Requirement to become appointed as Safety Supervisor
  • Requirement to become appointed as Sub Contractor Supervisor as applicable
  • Requirement to become appointed as a PMP Manager as applicable
  • Requirement to become appointed to an emergency response roles e.g. Access Controller, Deputy Access Controller, Board Person etc. as applicable
  • Requirement to become appointed as a Building Controller as applicable
  • Holds IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent as a minimum qualification. NEBOSH General Certificate would be desirable
  • Good general safety case awareness but with demonstrable knowledge of nuclear Safety Mechanisms (SM), safety Related Equipment (SRE) and Safety Features (SF).
  • Ability to undertake an emergency response role in an incident or emergency situation
