Industrial Placements - Material Science

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

We’re looking for excellent undergraduates who will help shape the future of our business. If you’re technically minded and your ideas for the future align with ours, we can offer you a world-class opportunity to develop your skills and discover yourself as a future talent in the nuclear industry. We have summer placement opportunities (minimum of 8 weeks) or 12-month industrial placements available. You will work at any of our sites on real projects that make a difference to the industry.

Role Responsibility

Discover Materials Science

We have opportunities for Material Scientists across all of our business areas. As a material scientist you could be involved electrochemistry, research to understand corrosion mechanisms and carrying out corrosion assessments to determine the lifetime of plant.

You could be involved in glass chemistry supporting the vitrification of nuclear waste or studies on the longevity of containers for the long term storage of plutonium. Material Scientists are also involved in the remote characterisation of used nuclear fuel and cladding and experimental  assessments of its degradation behaviour during storage and disposal.

Some of our Materials Graduates provide essential support to operating and future reactors. This is through understanding of the impact of the conditions under which they operate (e.g. temperature, radiation etc.) and the impact this has on the metals and alloys which form vital structural and operational components.

What will you discover?

Placements contribute towards our resourcing strategy. Successful applicants will be strong candidates for eventually joining our graduate programme.
