Effluent and Environmental Chemist
Job Introduction
The UK National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking a talented experimental chemist to join its effluents and environmental team based on the Sellafield site in Cumbria. This is an important role working closely with Technical Leads and will require interaction with a range of internal and external customers. The successful candidate should have a degree in chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering or geochemistry (or similar) and have experience of working within a lab based environment. The position will primarily support customer projects by providing experimental data, testing and underpinning evidence for processes yet to be implemented on effluent treatment plants. In addition, the researcher will have the opportunity to work on internally funded research projects. The position will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to author high impact publications and to be actively involved in knowledge exchange with the nuclear industry.
Role Responsibility
Provide technical expertise and guidance on issues appropriate to their discipline.
Development of commercial work programmes and collaborative research with academia and partner organisations.
Interpretation and presentation of results including contributions to Technical Memoranda and Reports.
Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.
Keep abreast of developments in their own field and apply them to projects.
Provide support to develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company.
Ensures all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied
Support team to meet objectives
The Ideal Candidate
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
Degree in chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering or geochemistry (or similar) OR lower professional qualifications e.g. HND/BTEC/HTEC with typically at least 5 years relevant experience
Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
Experience working in a laboratory environment (ideally familiar with handling radioactive substances)
Familiarity with a range of analytical techniques eg SEM, ICP/OES-MS, alpha spectrometry, gamma spectrometry, LSC.
Experience in radiochemistry
Knowledge of radioactive waste disposal
