Business Relationship Manager

Job Introduction

The Business Relationship Manager proactively serves as a “trusted advisor” and functions as a key IT point of contact for business stakeholders. They represent IT by promoting IT’s vision, value, services and capabilities. They also act as advocates on behalf of business stakeholders to ensure the delivery of IT Services meet the business priorities and needs.

The purpose of the role is:

  • To act as a trusted advisor to the business, and a key point of contact for IT.
  • To ensure the alignment of technology solutions with business strategies and objectives.
  • To develop and maintain strategic relationships between key business stakeholders and IT teams.
  • To support business strategy by contributing to, and influence business plans.
  • To represent the business strategies and priorities to the IT teams.
  • To act as a trusted advisor and advocate for business requirements and required results.
  • To represent the business and provide support for project delivery aligned to business expectations.
  • To promote business knowledge of IT capabilities.

Role Responsibility

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Strategic Relationships & Planning

  • Establishing and maintaining strategic relationships between key business stakeholders and IT teams.
  • Facilitating internal stakeholder business planning and strategy meetings to ensure business and IT strategies remain aligned.
  • Participating in short and long-term strategic planning with the business to support IT capacity planning and Service performance.
  • Understanding and anticipating the direction of the business, identifying opportunities to make recommendations to support the desired business future state.

Oversight and Support

  • Ensuring oversight for the resolutions of escalated IT issues.
  • Ensuring that business need is addressed by any proposed solutions.
  • Providing project oversight and support to ensure awareness of risks, issues and progress.
  • Maximising the impact of change

Advocacy

  • Representing the business strategy and priorities to IT.
  • Representing the IT strategy and vision to the business.
  • Promoting business knowledge and awareness of IT, roles, policies and procedures.
  • Acting as an advocate for business requirements and required results.
  • Ensuring the IT teams are aware of key business issues and challenges.
  • Identifying and mitigating problems and conflicts with IT delivery.
  • Leading and championing change management activities.

Consultancy

  • Providing strategic consultation to business and IT teams and participating in quality reviews and feedback sessions.
  • Advising on options, risks and costs versus benefits and impact on end-user products and services.
  • Ensuring that IT solutions support the business’s short and long-term goals and objectives whilst remaining aligned with IT strategy.
  • Eliciting business requirements for input into solution design process and project delivery framework.
  • Analysing technology trends and usage, to determine the impact of solutions, project and products on business goals and objectives.
  • Leads the development of business cases for change, working with both IT and business stakeholder around cost and benefits respectively.

Business Decision Support

  • Develops and advocates recommendations for solution options in conjunction with IT stakeholders.
  • Workings with appropriate business and IT stakeholders to proactively identify and evaluate risks associated with business or technology decisions.
  • Negotiating agreements and commitments by facilitating communication between business and IT stakeholders from requirements to project completion.

Stakeholder Satisfaction

  • Managing business expectations and perception across all IT Services and deliverables.
  • Supporting and participating in formal project reporting.
  • Providing periodic reviews and reports on service delivery and project performance.

General Support and Assistance

  • Assisting with (or taking the lead on) IT project delivery where required.
  • Proving business stakeholders with general support, guidance and training where needed.
  • Capturing and mapping business processes to support “line of sight” from the business domain through to the technical architectural domains.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will:

  • possess a broad knowledge of IT for a medium sized organisation, ideally with a scientific / engineering background.
  • have strong communication and influencing skills and the ability to build relationships and influence senior stakeholders;
  • be able to translate between IT and business stakeholders;
  • have strong project delivery skills (i.e. can demonstrate the successful delivery of projects – to time, cost and quality);
  • have a proven track record and relevant experience in a similar role
  • be qualified to at least degree level.
